Fluoride is a naturally occurring element found in fish, tea, toothpaste, and some natural water supplies. Fluoride strengthens the enamel, the outer layer of the tooth. When the enamel loses its mineral content, this is the first stage of a cavity or hole. If left, this will progress to a stage where a filling will need to be placed
These early tooth decay lesions can be remineralised using fluoride, repairing the early damage. These early lesions are often detected between the teeth, especially in people who don’t use dental floss regularly.
We take dental x-rays to see between the teeth at the back of the mouth, and by finding the early enamel lesions, this way, we can stop their progress by changing our daily routine, adding flossing and fluoride.
These early holes are monitored regularly, to check they aren’t getting worse …..regular check ups with the dentist are essential.
Some patients don’t like to use fluoride so here at BKP Dental Tewantin we offer fluoride alternatives.
